I’ve almost stopped consuming social media completely. I’ve had to take a deep look into why I was consuming. A time killer? An escape from life? A dopamine rush? I was following “influencers” for what reason? I don’t particularly care about their life. I don’t really care what products they are buying. They aren’t serving me any purpose. Social media has become one giant ad. As a marketing professional I almost had to be a part of social media because of my work. Now that I’ve taken a break from that profession, I’m rethinking my reason for being in that space. I just have to wonder when other people will do the same and what “the next big thing” will be.
You are right, and I feel the same. I do think there is a better way. And I am looking forward to trying to find it! I love the connection and inspiration from earlier eras.
I was off of social media for 3 years before I began sharing my art publicly here on Substack this year. Being in community with other artists has made this place a different experience.
I’ve been thinking, could I start with 2-3 friends and say let’s try something? Instead of sharing on Instagram (I do love to send a post to someone who shares my sensibilities, especially sense of humor. You know..🤪🤪🤣🤣)we talk on the phone more. Not efficient but considering all the scrolling past ads maybe a time-saver in the end. I don’t know but I don’t like what it has become either.

I didn’t know I needed these words, this awakening, until now. Thank you and I cannot wait for what’s to come 🧡
Welll I don't think it's sooo black and white - there's a whole lot in between and why not both?! BUT true about insta :( it makes me a little sad.
Glad to see you here, Jeni :)
